It’s January, which means we’re all in the middle of committing to New Years Resolutions and making a path to a better new year. Many people commit to losing weight, especially after the post-apocalyptic nature of the holiday season. However, many people struggle and fail on their weight loss endeavors for all kinds of reasons. Even if you’re on the Paleo diet, even if you’re started exercising, even if you’re seemingly doing everything right, there are many reasons you’re not losing weight. Look to the following 4 most common reasons you’re not losing weight, and get back on track for this January. (Or February-December. Weight loss is an ever-constant strategy session.)

Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight #1: You Eat When Standing or Watching Television

If you’re doing anything that distracts you, like standing up or watching television while eating, you might find yourself committing to a ton of mindless eating. In order to promote weight loss, it’s essential that you appropriate when and where you’re going to eat your food. (Note that this is not generally appropriate in the bed. Beds are for two things only. If you eat while you’re in bed, you’re confusing your head and possibly messing up your future sleep schedule.)

The main rule: concentrate on your food and your body to recognize when you’re full and when you should stop eating.

Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight #2: You Binge On “Diet” Foods

Foods like 100-calorie packs have remarkably amazing disguises. They make you think you’re dieting, when you’re really filling yourself with chemicals and sodium. What’s more, they don’t make you feel “full.” Therefore, you’ll ultimate grab another one on your way out the door, in between meals, or before bedtime, ultimately refuting your weight loss plans.

Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight #3: You’re Skipping Out on Weight Lifting

If you’re a cardio person (like me), you might be missing out on one of the most important elements of weight loss: building muscle. When you build muscles via weight lifting, you strengthen your joints, thus preventing future injury. Furthermore, you boost your metabolic rate, thus helping yourself to burn more calories when you’re at rest.

Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight #4: You Don’t Get Enough Rest

Remember when you first went to college, you stayed out all night, and you gained a few extra pounds during your first semester? This might not all be due to the extra calories you were ingesting. Instead, your body really requires sleep in order to heal itself. Furthermore, when you don’t get enough sleep, your body creates more hormones that actually boost your appetite. Therefore, if you’re sleepy, without enough rest, you might head to the local bagel shop without even thinking. This can ultimately hinder your weight loss plans.

Therefore, in the following few months of your weight loss new years resolution, make sure you watch that you don’t eat “fake” foods, make sure you lift plenty of weights, make sure you ALWAYS get enough sleep, and make sure you pay attention while you’re eating. If the Paleo diet food you’re eating is delicious enough (which it always is, at least in my house), you won’t want to give your attention to anything else.
